Back home – and a role model for the next generation
In August, we at Upendo had the pleasure of welcoming some very special guests: several young adults who had themselves grown up at the Upendo Children’s Village returned to visit the place they had long called home. They have now completed their university studies, are leading independent lives and are boldly shaping their own futures. It was all the more wonderful to welcome them back – not just as former residents, but as strong role models for the children and young people living at Upendo today.
During their visit, they rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in: together, they tended to the outdoor areas, raking and tidying them up. They also prepared lunch and some snacks for the children. The result was a joyful day full of encounters, shared memories and a genuine sense of connection. The exchange with the children currently living in the Children’s Village was particularly valuable. The young adults spoke about their own educational journeys, their personal challenges and their transition to an independent life. In doing so, they encouraged the children to take their academic and personal development seriously and to pursue their goals with perseverance.
Their stories powerfully demonstrate that, with education, support, determination and people who believe in you, the journey from care into an independent adult life can be a success.
For our former residents, too, the visit was a special opportunity to look back on their own journeys and reconnect with the people and the place that have supported them over many years. The fact that they now return of their own accord, give of their time and pass on their experiences fills us with great joy and pride.
Thank you for coming home, for getting involved and for inspiring the next generation. You are, and always will be, a valuable part of the Upendo family!
